A GAS SAFETY CHECK GIVES PEACE OF MIND THAT YOUR GAS APPLIANCES ARE NOT OMITTING CARBON MONOXIDE
Paying attention to your gas system is extremely important to guarantee the safety of you and your family. Having your gas appliances checked annually will ensure they are working correctly and not leaking carbon monoxide into your home or office. A gas safety check is different from a gas service. It is primarily designed to inspect any gas appliances including boilers, cookers and fires (permanent or portable) to ensure they are working correctly and safely.
What is an appliance safety check?
An appliance safety check at a minimum includes all of the checks and tests to ensure the appliance is safe to operate, for example:
- It is correctly set and adjusted to ensure the gas is burning correctly.
- It is of a type suitable for the room in which it is located.
- It is physically stable, securely fitted and properly connected to the gas pipework.
- There is an adequate and permanent air supply suitable for the appliance type installed.
- Any flues or chimneys are operating correctly.
- All safety devices function correctly.
Dangers of Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless so you won’t see or smell it coming. Natural gas is also odourless but in Australia has a gas added (Ethyl Mercaptan) so it smells, described as being like rotten cabbage, this means you may detect a gas leak, however despite this you will not detect carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide when it is breathed in replaces oxygen in your blood. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal. It is vital to ensure that your gas appliances are working correctly. If there is poor ventilation, the flue is blocked or the appliance is faulty then issues can occur.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has some warning signs such as:
- Tiredness
- Shortness of breath
- Mild to severe
- Headaches
- Nausea and vomiting
Carbon monoxide replaces oxygen in the blood and loss of consciousness can occur. Children and the elderly are generally more susceptible.
